THE CHAMPIONS OF GOSPEL TRUTHS, THE REFORMERS WHO PLANTED
THE BLOOD-STAINED BANNER OF JESUS IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE WORLD.
15. William Miller in America.
When the Protestant churches, both of America and Europe become
corrupt, God raised another people to continue this unbroken line
of faith of the apostolic church.
THE ADVENT MOVEMENT OF 1844
“What produces the effect is this: Bro. Miller simply
takes the sword of the Spirit, unsheathed, and lays its sharp
edge on the naked heart, and it cuts; that is all. Before the
edge of this mighty weapon, infidelity falls and Universalism
withers; false foundations vanish, and Babel's merchants wonder.
It seems to me that this must be a little the nearest to apostolic
revivals of anything that modern times have witnessed."
Review and Herald, November 25, 1884 par. 14.
“Of all the great religious movements since the days of
the apostles, none have been more free from human imperfection
and the wiles of Satan than was that of the autumn of 1844. Even
now, after the lapse of many years, all who shared in that movement
and who have stood firm upon the platform of truth still feel
the holy influence of that blessed work and bear witness that
it was of God.”
Great Controversy, p 401.
What was the message preached by Miller?
“Those who proclaimed this warning gave the right message
at the right time. But as the early disciples declared, "The
time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand," based
on the prophecy of Daniel 9, while they failed to perceive that
the death of the Messiah was foretold in the same scripture, so
Miller and his associates preached the message based on Daniel
8:14 and Revelation 14:7, and failed to see that there were still
other messages brought to view in Revelation 14, which were also
to be given before the advent of the Lord. As the disciples were
mistaken in regard to the kingdom to be set up at the end of the
seventy weeks, so Adventists were mistaken in regard to the event
to take place at the expiration of the 2300 days. In both cases
there was an acceptance of, or rather an adherence to, popular
errors that blinded the mind to the truth. Both classes fulfilled
the will of God in delivering the message which He desired to
be given, and both, through their own misapprehension of their
message, suffered disappointment.
“Yet God accomplished His own beneficent purpose in permitting
the warning of the judgment to be given just as it was. The great
day was at hand, and in His providence the people were brought
to the test of a definite time, in order to reveal to them what
was in their hearts. The message was designed for the testing
and purification of the church.”
Great Controversy, p 352-353.
“The messages from heaven are of a character to arouse
opposition. The faithful witnesses for Christ and the truth will
reprove sin. Their words will be like a hammer to break the flinty
heart, like a fire to consume the dross. There is constant need
of earnest, decided messages of warning. God will have men who
are true to duty. At the right time He sends His faithful messengers
to do a work similar to that of Elijah.”
Testimonies, vol 5, p 254.
How did the advent movement appear in Europe and America, as
well as in other countries?
“Like the great Reformation of the sixteenth century, the
advent movement appeared in different countries of Christendom
at the same time. In both Europe and America men of faith and
prayer were led to the study of the prophecies, and, tracing down
the inspired record, they saw convincing evidence that the end
of all things was at hand. In different lands there were isolated
bodies of Christians who, solely by the study of the Scriptures,
arrived at the belief that the Saviour's advent was near.”
Great Controversy, p 357.
The Advent movement of1844 gave birth to the Seventh Day Adventist
Church founded on “the correct understanding of the ministration
in the heavenly sanctuary.” (Ev 221). Unfortunately however,
Sis. White had seen this pillar being taken down by its church
leaders, ultimately resulting in rebellion and apostasy.
“Our ministering brethren were looking on, watching what
was being done, but they did not seem to understand. The foundation
of our faith, which was established by so much prayer, such earnest
searching of the Scriptures, was being taken down, pillar by pillar.
Our faith was to have nothing to rest upon--the sanctuary was
gone, the atonement was gone. “
Upward Look, p 152 (1904).
“After the passing of the time, God entrusted to His faithful
followers the precious principles of present truth. These principles
were not given to those who had had no part in the giving of the
first and second angels' messages. They were given to the workers
who had had a part in the cause from the beginning.
“Those who passed through these experiences are to be as
firm as a rock to the principles that have made us Seventh-day
Adventists. They are to be workers together with God, binding
up the testimony and sealing the law among His disciples. Those
who took part in the establishment of our work upon a foundation
of Bible truth, those who know the waymarks that have pointed
out the right path, are to be regarded as workers of the highest
value. They can speak from personal experience, regarding the
truths entrusted to them. These men are not to permit their faith
to be changed to infidelity; they are not to permit the banner
of the third angel to be taken from their hands. They are to hold
the beginning of their confidence firm unto the end.”
“The Lord has declared that the history of the past shall
be rehearsed as we enter upon the closing work. Every truth that
He has given for these last days is to be proclaimed to the world.
Every pillar that He has established is to be strengthened. We
cannot now step off the foundation that God has established. We
cannot now enter into any new organization; for this would mean
apostasy from the truth.--Manuscript 129, 1905.”
Selected Messages, book 2, p 389-390.
“I question whether genuine rebellion is ever curable.
Study in Patriarchs and Prophets the rebellion of Korah, Dathan,
and Abiram. This rebellion was extended, including more than two
men. [A COMPARISON IS HERE DRAWN BETWEEN KORAH'S REBELLION AND
A CURRENT APOSTASY LED BY TWO MEN IN A CERTAIN FIELD. SEE ALSO
PAGE 394.] It was led by two hundred and fifty princes of the
congregation, men of renown. Call rebellion by its right name
and apostasy by its right name, and then consider that the experience
of the ancient people of God with all its objectionable features
was faithfully chronicled to pass into history. The Scripture
declares, "These things . . . are written for our admonition,
upon whom the ends of the world are come" (1 Cor. 10:11).
And if men and women who have the knowledge of the truth are so
far separated from their great Leader that they will take the
great leader of apostasy and name him Christ our Righteousness,
it is because they have not sunk deep into the mines of the truth.
They are not able to distinguish the precious ore from the base
material…”
“The standard of truth, of the first, second, and third
angels' messages has been left to trail in the dust…
“Rebellion and apostasy are in the very air we breathe.
We shall be affected by them unless we by faith hang our helpless
souls upon Christ.”
Selected Messages, book 2, p 393-394.
