TEMPERANCE AND SUNDAY MOVEMENT:
A False Unity Foretold
“This claim is especially urged in America, where the doctrine
of the true Sabbath has been most widely preached. Here the temperance
work, one of the most prominent and important of moral reforms,
is often combined with the Sunday movement, and the advocates
of the latter represent themselves as laboring to promote the
highest interest of society; and those who refuse to unite with
them are denounced as the enemies of temperance and reform. But
the fact that a movement to establish error is connected with
a work which is in itself good, is not an argument in favor of
the error. We may disguise poison by mingling it with wholesome
food, but we do not change its nature. On the contrary, it is
rendered more dangerous, as it is more likely to be taken unawares.
It is one of Satan's devices to combine with falsehood just enough
truth to give it plausibility. The leaders of the Sunday movement
may advocate reforms which the people need, principles which are
in harmony with the Bible; yet while there is with these a requirement
which is contrary to God's law, His servants cannot unite with
them. Nothing can justify them in setting aside the commandments
of God for the precepts of men.”
Great Controversy, p 587-588.
Please note that although the whole world is involved
in this conspiracy and deception Yet we have no doubt, that it
is the Seventh day Adventist Church under the banner of the General
Conference of America who is the leading advocate of temperance
work. This includes all the so-called health reformers, fanatics,
time setters, those who love excitement, those who have no message,
those who suppress some or part of the message, those who pervert
the message, those who use worldly policy, those who pattern their
organization after the Babylonian Churches, those who have no
Gospel Order, those who have no Church discipline, those who are
independent atoms, those who claim God’s prerogative as
the director of this work or their ministry, who profess to keep
the Sabbath and teach the truth but will not receive the seal
of God.
Will the SDA Church teach and advocate Sunday keeping? Yes!
What proof have we?
“There is need of Sabbath reform among us, who profess to
observe God’s holy rest day… The Lord has controversy
with His professed people in these last days. In this controversy
men in responsible position will take a course directly opposite
to that pursued by Nehemiah. They will not only ignore and despise
the Sabbath themselves, but they will try to keep it from others
by burying it beneath the rubbish of custom and tradition. In
churches and in large gatherings in the open air, ministers will
urge upon the people the necessity of keeping the first day of
the week.” Review and Herald Vol. 1 p. 405, March 18,
1884.
“Men in responsible positions will not only ignore and despise
the Sabbath themselves, but from the sacred desk will urge upon
the people the observance of the first day of the week, pleading
tradition and custom in behalf of this man-made institution.”
Southern Watchman, June 4. 1906. (ChS 155).
What is God’s warning to His servants in this great
crisis?
“The leaders of the Sunday movement may advocate reforms
which the people need, principles which are in harmony with the
Bible; yet while there is with these a requirement which is contrary
to God's law, His servants cannot unite with them.” GC
588.
