MODERN
SPIRITUALISM IDENTIFIED (Nos. 1-10)
Spiritualism lays aside Jesus as the Head of the church and
puts another head.
1. “Vain philosophy. The members of the body are controlled
by the head. Spiritualists lay aside the Head and believe that
all the members of the body must act themselves and that fixed
laws will lead them on in a state of progression to perfection
without a head… Spiritualism is a lie. It is founded upon
the great original lie, "Ye shall not surely die." Thousands
cut off the Head, and the result is the members act without Jesus
for their head, and another guides the body. Satan controls them.”
Testimonies, vol 1, p 300-301
2. Spiritualism believes in communion with the dead.
“Nearly all forms of ancient sorcery and witchcraft were
founded upon a belief in communion with the dead…The belief
in communion with the dead is still held, even in professedly
Christian lands. Under the name of spiritualism the practice of
communicating with beings claiming to be the spirits of the departed
has become widespread. It is calculated to take hold of the sympathies
of those who have laid their loved ones in the grave. Spiritual
beings sometimes appear to persons in the form of their deceased
friends, and relate incidents connected with their lives and perform
acts which they performed while living. In this way they lead
men to believe that their dead friends are angels, hovering over
them and communicating with them. Those who thus assume to be
the spirits of the departed are regarded with a certain idolatry,
and with many their word has greater weight than the word of God.”
Patriarchs and Prophets, p 684-685.
3. Spiritualism believes in man’s consciousness in death.
“The doctrine of man's consciousness in death, especially
the belief that spirits of the dead return to minister to the
living, has prepared the way for modern spiritualism.”
Great Controversy, p 551
“Those who give themselves up to the sorcery of Satan,
may boast of great benefit received, but does this prove their
course to be wise or safe? What if life should be prolonged? What
if temporal gain should be secured? Will it pay in the end to
have disregarded the will of God?”
RH, January 15, 1914.
4. Spiritualism destroys man’s confidence in God by forecasting
future events which God has hidden.
“The lure by which spiritualism attracts the multitudes
is its pretended power to draw aside the veil from the future
and reveal to men what God has hidden. God has in His word opened
before us the great events of the future--all that it is essential
for us to know--and He has given us a safe guide for our feet
amid all its perils; but it is Satan's purpose to destroy men's
confidence in God, to make them dissatisfied with their condition
in life, and to lead them to seek a knowledge of what God has
wisely veiled from them, and to despise what He has revealed in
His Holy Word… Satan leads men to consult those that have
familiar spirits; and by revealing hidden things of the past,
he inspires confidence in his power to foretell things to come.
By experience gained through the long ages he can reason from
cause to effect and often forecast, with a degree of accuracy,
some of the future events of man's life. Thus he in enabled to
deceive poor, misguided souls and bring them under his power and
lead them captive at his will.”
Patriarchs and Prophets, p 686-687.
5. Spiritualism makes no difference between righteousness and
sin.
“If there were no other evidence of the real character of
spiritualism, it should be enough for the Christian that the spirits
make no difference between righteousness and sin, between the
noblest and purest of the apostles of Christ and the most corrupt
of the servants of Satan. By representing the basest of men as
in heaven, and highly exalted there, Satan says to the world:
"No matter how wicked you are; no matter whether you believe
or disbelieve God and the Bible. Live as you please; heaven is
your home." The spiritualist teachers virtually declare:
"Everyone that doeth evil is good in the sight of the Lord,
and He delighteth in them; or, Where is the God of judgment?"
Malachi 2:17. Saith the word of God: "Woe unto them that
call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and
light for darkness." Isaiah 5:20.”
Great Controversy, p 556-557.
What would happen if we were not separated from sin and sinners?
“The angel is to place a mark upon the forehead of all who
are separated from sin and sinners, and the destroying angel will
follow, to slay utterly both old and young.”
Testimonies, vol 5, p 505.
6. Spiritualism uses love degraded to sentimentalism making little
distinction between good and evil.
“It is true that spiritualism is now changing its form and,
veiling some of its more objectionable features, is assuming a
Christian guise. But its utterances from the platform and the
press have been before the public for many years, and in these
its real character stands revealed. These teachings cannot be
denied or hidden.”
“Even in its present form, so far from being more worthy
of toleration than formerly, it is really a more dangerous, because
a more subtle, deception. While it formerly denounced Christ and
the Bible, it now professes to accept both. But the Bible is interpreted
in a manner that is pleasing to the unrenewed heart, while its
solemn and vital truths are made of no effect. Love is dwelt upon
as the chief attribute of God, but it is degraded to a weak sentimentalism,
making little distinction between good and evil. God's justice,
His denunciations of sin, the requirements of His holy law, are
all kept out of sight. The people are taught to regard the Decalogue
as a dead letter. Pleasing, bewitching fables captivate the senses
and lead men to reject the Bible as the foundation of their faith.
Christ is as verily denied as before; but Satan has so blinded
the eyes of the people that the deception is not discerned.”
Great Controversy, p 557-558.
7. Spiritualism teaches that there is no punishment for sinner;
and no matter how corrupt man is, he will be exalted to heaven.
“The prophet Isaiah brings to view the fearful deception
which will come upon the wicked, causing them to count themselves
secure from the judgments of God: "We have made a covenant
with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing
scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we
have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves."
Isaiah 28:15. In the class here described are included those who
in their stubborn impenitence comfort themselves with the assurance
that there is to be no punishment for the sinner; that all mankind,
it matters not how corrupt, are to be exalted to heaven, to become
as the angels of God. But still more emphatically are those making
a covenant with death and an agreement with hell, who renounce
the truths which Heaven has provided as a defense for the righteous
in the day of trouble, and accept the refuge of lies offered by
Satan in its stead--the delusive pretensions of spiritualism.”
Great Controversy, p 560-561.
“Spiritualism declares that there is no death, no sin, no
judgment, no retribution; that "men are unfallen demigods;"
that desire is the highest law; and that man is accountable only
to himself.”
Patriarchs and Prophets, p 688.
The death penalty then imposed by God has been abolished. Since
He is a God of order, what requirements He set now to preserve
the church’ order and harmony?
“Brethren, never allow anyone's ideas to unsettle your faith
in regard to the order and harmony which should exist in the church.
Many of you do not see all things clearly. The directions in regard
to order in the tabernacle service were recorded that lessons
might be drawn from it by all who should live upon the earth.
Men were selected to do various parts of the work of setting up
and taking down the tabernacle, and if one strayed in carelessly
and put his hands to the work assigned to another, he was to be
put to death. We serve the same God today. But the death penalty
has been abolished; had it not been, there would not now be so
much careless, disorderly work in His cause. The God of heaven
is a God of order, and He requires all His followers to have rules
and regulations, and to preserve order. All should have a perfect
understanding of God's work.”
Testimonies, vol 5, p 274.
What are these rules and regulations?
“The world's Redeemer has invested great power with His
church. He states the rules to be applied in cases of trial with
its members. After He has given explicit directions as to the
course to be pursued, He says: "Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever
ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever
[in church discipline] ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed
in heaven." Thus even the heavenly authority ratifies the
discipline of the church in regard to its members when the Bible
rule has been followed.
“The word of God does not give license for one man to set
up his judgment in opposition to the judgment of the church, neither
is he allowed to urge his opinions against the opinions of the
church. If there were no church discipline and government, the
church would go to fragments; it could not hold together as a
body.”
Testimonies, vol 3, p 428.
As our High Priest Jesus is now in the Heavenly Sanctuary doing
a great work for us, what is that great work?
“Those who by faith follow Jesus in the great work of the
atonement, receive the benefits of his mediation in their behalf;
but those who reject the light that brings to view this work of
ministration, are not benefited thereby… When Jesus at his
ascension entered by his own blood into the heavenly sanctuary
to shed upon his disciples the blessings of his mediation, the
Jews were left in total darkness, to continue their useless sacrifices
and offerings. The ministration of types and shadows had ceased.
That door by which men had formerly found access to God, was no
longer open. The Jews had refused to seek him in the only way
whereby he could then be found, through the ministration in the
sanctuary in Heaven. Therefore they found no communion with God.
To them the door was shut. They had no knowledge of Christ as
the true sacrifice and the only mediator before God; hence they
could not receive the benefits of his mediation.
“The condition of the unbelieving Jews illustrates the condition
of the careless and unbelieving among professed Christians, who
are willingly ignorant of the work of our merciful High Priest.
In the typical service, when the high priest entered the most
holy place, all Israel were required to gather about the sanctuary,
and in the most solemn manner humble their souls before God, that
they might receive the pardon of their sins, and not be cut off
from the congregation. How much more essential in this anti-typical
day of atonement that we understand the work of our High Priest,
and know what duties are required of us.”
Spirit of Prophecy, vol 4, p 270.

8. Spiritualism teaches some truths but mixed with errors.
“The pretended visitants from the world of spirits sometimes
utter cautions and warnings which prove to be correct. Then, as
confidence is gained, they present doctrines that directly undermine
faith in the Scriptures. With an appearance of deep interest in
the well-being of their friends on earth, they insinuate the most
dangerous errors. The fact that they state some truths, and are
able at times to foretell future events, gives to their statements
an appearance of reliability; and their false teachings are accepted
by the multitudes as readily, and believed as implicitly, as if
they were the most sacred truths of the Bible. The law of God
is set aside, the Spirit of grace despised, the blood of the covenant
counted an unholy thing. The spirits deny the deity of Christ
and place even the Creator on a level with themselves. Thus under
a new disguise the great rebel till carries on this warfare against
God, begun in heaven and for nearly six thousand years continued
upon the earth.”
Great Controversy, p 552.
9. Spiritualism breaks down the barriers or the law that God
has erected.
“The barriers that God has erected to guard truth, purity,
and reverence are broken down, and many are thus emboldened in
sin. Does not such teaching suggest an origin similar to that
of demon worship?”
Patriarchs and Prophets, p 688.
“The work of restoration and reform carried on by the
returned exiles, under the leadership of Zerubbabel, Ezra, and
Nehemiah, presents a picture of a work of spiritual restoration
that is to be wrought in the closing days of this earth's history…
“The spiritual restoration of which the work carried forward
in Nehemiah's day was a symbol, is outlined in the words of Isaiah:
"They shall build the old wastes, they shall raise up the
former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities."
"They that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places:
thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou
shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths
to dwell in." Isaiah 61:4; 58:12.
“The prophet here describes a people who, in a time of general
departure from truth and righteousness, are seeking to restore
the principles that are the foundation of the kingdom of God.
They are repairers of a breach that has been made in God's law--the
wall that He has placed around His chosen ones for their protection,
and obedience to whose precepts of justice, truth, and purity
is to be their perpetual safeguard.”
Prophets and Kings, p 677-678.
How is the wall of the Heavenly City described?
“And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in
them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.”
Revelation 21:14.
10. Spiritualism is like the sin of rebellion.
“For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness
is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word
of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.”
1 Samuel 15:23.
